Building Legacies One Day at a Time
Over the last 5 -10 years, there has been an increase in crimes committed by young minority males in the greater Columbia area. Also, there has been a decline in minority students furthering their educational needs. As educators, parents, and concerned citizens, we came together and decided to not only be part of the conversation, but to be a part of the solution as well. For the last 3 years, we have been researching and gathering data to compile a list of needs from various communities throughout Columbia, SC and surrounding areas. Our findings showed that almost every community had the same goals and concerns. Those common threads include but are not limited to, safe environments, improved educational experiences for their youth, support for families, and networking opportunities for businesses and professionals.
Building Legacies is a minority owned non-profit organization. It was developed to ensure that students considered to be high poverty or at-risk, receive intensive educational support, and are provided with opportunities (in of color have the same equal OPPORTUNITY) to experience success and increased levels of academic achievement prosper in the greater Columbia, SC area. Our goal is not only to provide the necessary educational resources and services to our youth, but to assist with the growth and prosperity of the entire community. We will support students through STEAM activities, mentoring, and tutoring. Additionally, We want to provide training and professional development for educators. As a result, they will be able to better educate, engage, enhance, and elevate our students to reach higher levels of achievement.

Building Legacies’ mission is to improve one’s quality of life by providing support and conducting non-partisan research, education, and informational activities to increase public awareness within various communities. To provide all individuals with the knowledge to improve their quality of life. We are committed to cultivating the individual characteristics that make us who we are. The improved understanding of those characteristics will enhance growth towards improving your quality of life. We understand that our future depends on the foundation that we provide for our students today. Therefore, it is imperative that we ensure that our students’ experience increased levels of academic success. Our services are geared towards equipping them with the essential knowledge and skills necessary to become productive in school, their everyday lives, and communities.
Not only do we need to support our students but we provide support for their families as well. Family support has an impact on whether or not students are successful in school and in life. We acknowledge that it is sometimes difficult for students to receive support from their families, due to various circumstances.
As we all know, it takes a village to raise a child. Therefore, Communities are essential in providing support for the whole family. Therefore, our team plans to collaborate with programs and businesses from various communities, by offering them professional training and learning opportunities.
Building Legacies understands that educators play an important role in the lives of our students. Furthermore, we understand the impact of having a caring, confident, competent, and effective educator in every classroom. The services that we provide will help to ensure that this is a reality in every classroom. Our commitment to building educator efficacy is a continuous process and we plan to achieve this goal by offering a variety of specialized training and professional development and a place to network and collaborate with other educators.
There are several goals that help to drive the work of Building Legacies along with our core values and beliefs. Ultimately, we seek to enhance the quality of life for all individuals that we provided services for and to all individuals or organizations that we form partnerships with. We aspire to be a pillar of positive change within the community and to the other communities that we are fortunate enough to serve.
